Players can also unlock the Artificer character here by paying 10 lunar coins into the statue of her near the Newt. Hidden in the depths of the level is a portal to the void fields, where players can farm items without the time or difficulty of the game increasing. Despite the obvious scammy nature, The Bazaar Between Time is generally worth the 1 lunar coin investment. You read that right, the Bazaar Between Time is essentially Comic Con you have to pay money to then pay money to buy things. Going into the blue portal instead of the teleporter will transport the player to the Bazaar Between Time, where they can spend more lunar coins. Players can find newt altars hidden on levels, and when they give a coin to the altar a blue portal will appear after the teleporter event. The biggest thing that Lunar coins do is give the player access to the Bazaar Between Time. This makes sense, given that they carry over from run to run and can have some pretty crazy effects. Lunar coins are not earned as fast as money or equipment in a run. While money and items have uses that are fairly self explanatory, lunar coins require a little more defining. So if a player earns 2 lunar coins in a run, they are added to the player’s bank of lunar coins. Lunar coins differ from these collectibles in that they carry over from run to run. At the end of a run, the money and items that players collect dies with them. Items which give various effects that augment the player’s run, money which is used to buy said Items, and lunar coins. One of the most unique additions to the series has been the lunar coin system, but obtaining and using these coins can be a struggle. The result of this has been an immensely well-received sequel, with Risk of Rain 2 having over 56,000 positive reviews on Steam and an overwhelmingly positive status.
Hopoo games has done a fantastic job of inserting new game mechanics and removing old ones to make this transition as seamless as possible. Namely, Hopoo Games transitioned the series into a 3D game from a side scrolling 2D game. There’s a pretty stark contrast between Risk of Rain 2 and the original Risk of Rain.
